Has anyone been doing their own property value appeals?

If so, have you been successful getting the values down to
what you paid for the property?

What happens at the hearing? Can anyone go to the hearings
to watch? If so, how would I find out the location and time?

Is it worth paying someone to do it for me? I've had Jim Uhler
do a couple for us (2 successful, 1 not).

Thanks,

Emilie

I've had 6 appeals and all were successful. I use John Silvestri. We had to go to a second appeal for one of the properties, but it was eventually successful. When an appeal is filed either by you or the lawyer, you should get a notice in the mail with the time and date of the hearing. I've only gone to one and that was for the second appeal. I do not know if the initial appeal hearings are open to anyone - you would have to ask your lawyer.

I've never done an appeal myself.

The initial hearing is done before an assessment officer. At this hearing you simply put in your info regarding your value. In many instances the solicitors from the municipalities do not attend, except maybe the school solicitor. This is not an open forum so you cannot just go and watch these hearings. After both sides present their case the officer make a recommendation to the board who sends you their result.
